My Abuelita lives in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico and was taught to crochet and knit at the age of two by her great-aunts. She is highly skilled with the needles and has created beautiful and intricate pieces throughout her life. At 93, she is busy knitting tiny socks for her great-grandchildren. Abuelita taught me to crochet when I was five and knit at seven and I have been doing both ever since.
In 2001 I created the label One Tough Monkey and sold things I would crochet while watching my favorite old TV shows or listening to records. In 2003 abuelitaschango.com, Spanglish for Grandmother's Monkey, was created and over the years I have sold tiki lamps, hats, scarves, purses and waterproof, wool skull caps (for surfers).
In 2006 the pattern for the infamous Anarchy Irony Hat was featured in Debbie Stoller's book, Stitch 'N Bitch Crochet: The Happy Hooker. In 2007 One Tough Monkey became Tiki Monkey and I continue to create crocheted and knitted items as I become inspired. Inspiration arrives via changes in the seasons, trips to Mexico, old movies, The Monkees, roller skating, vintage shopping, thrifting on Saturday mornings and on and on. |
